To pass this area of the personal study it helps to have a clear introduction •Name the text and author • Summarise the plot • Identify the main themes and ideas • State your task •Give your first personal response Example:
The autobiographical novel,”A Sense of Freedom” by Jimmy Boyle is a true account of crime in Glasgow. The author describes how his violent childhood in the Gorbals led him to become a vicious thug who is sentenced to life in prison. It is here that he learns to break the habits that have ruined his life. The themes of the book are childhood, violence and self discovery. In my study I will explain how the character of Jimmy Boyle changes, from a violent criminal to a creative, peaceful person, and the forces that influence him. I found this to be a very moving novel that shows that everyone has the power to change their life if they take responsibility for their actions.
